In 2007 John Judd Sr. and John Judd Jr. set out to build homes for people the way they would want a home built for their own family. Hundreds of custom homes and remodels later, in Asheville and Hendersonville, that is still how the company runs.

Many builders lean on subcontractors. We employ our own craftsmen, and they work on our projects and nothing else. That is what keeps quality, schedule and budget under our control, and it is why the same faces are on your job site from the first framing day to the final walkthrough.

Our name is on every house we build. Everything else follows from that.

We specialize in whole-home remodels and large-scale additions, working with top architects and trusted vendors from the first concept to the last punch list item. Our own crew does the work, which is what keeps a lived-in house from turning into a job site with no end.

Whole house remodels typically take four months to a year, depending on the scope, and a project manager gives you an estimated timeline at the first consultation.

Commercial construction

Judd Builders holds an unlimited general contractor's license in North Carolina and completes commercial projects of all sizes each year: new construction, expansions, retail and office upfits, restaurant remodels, medical buildings and multi-family developments.

How a build runs

Five stages, in the order they actually happen, from the first phone call to the end of your warranty year.

Exploration

After the first phone call about the project and the budget, we meet in person or on Zoom. You meet the team, we go through your wants, needs and wish list, we walk through the design and construction process, and we review the pre-construction agreement.

Design consultation

We review your lot, give guidance on the designs that suit it, and refine your list. We coordinate with your architect partner on the house plan, or adjust the plan you already have. Interior design requirements get explored, selection meetings get arranged, and you get your Buildertrend login.

Budgeting

Budgeting runs 40 to 60 days depending on how complex the project is, how customized it is, and how quickly decisions come back. Your project manager guides selections with our preferred vendors, then we finalize the budget, discuss the schedule and sign the construction contract.

Construction

Schedule developed, permits secured, site prepared. Buildertrend gets updated with progress photos and daily logs, we meet periodically in person or on Zoom, the certificate of occupancy is issued, and we walk the finished house together.

Warranty and after care

Post-construction punch list items are reviewed and resolved. At month eleven you send your project manager anything else you have found, and every warrantied item is completed by month twelve. After that we are still here for the house.

Buildertrend, from day one

Every client gets a login to Buildertrend, the cloud system we run projects on. Project photos and videos, daily logs, checklists, plans, selections, schedules, messaging and document storage, on desktop or on your phone. It is how you see where your house is without having to ask.
